About CBID
The Center for Bioengineering Innovation and Design, home of the Adler Archer Laboratory.
The Center for Bioengineering Innovation and Design is a center of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins. Its master's program began in 2009. The center states two aims: to train people who will lead healthcare innovation, and to carry early solutions to difficult health problems.
Students start with clinical time at Johns Hopkins, then move into device design and into projects in health systems with fewer resources. The center's 2023 report counted 264 graduates and 115 projects since 2009, covering advanced health systems and global health, with clinical mentors, device-company partnerships, and a set of companies formed from the work.
The Adler Archer Laboratory is based at the center. Adler Archer directs the laboratory and is lab director at CBID. The laboratory works on applied social determinants of health innovation: the conditions outside the clinic, and how artificial intelligence changes the design and governance of that work. Fellows, collaborators, and the lab's programs use CBID as their Hopkins home.
