About BME

The Department of Biomedical Engineering, shared by the Whiting School of Engineering and the School of Medicine.

In 1961 the School of Medicine opened one of the first training programs in biomedical engineering. It became a department in 1970, with Richard Johns as its first director. The department is held jointly by the Whiting School of Engineering, established in 1979, and the School of Medicine. An undergraduate program on the Homewood campus followed. The department's account of itself is that it has helped define the field for more than fifty years, from a place where engineers and clinicians work in the same schools.

The Center for Bioengineering Innovation and Design is a center of this department. The Adler Archer Laboratory sits inside that center, so the laboratory's appointments, fellows, and the Biomedical Engineering mark on this site all run through the department. The lab uses that position between engineering and medicine for applied social determinants of health innovation: community health, data, and the rules around artificial intelligence.
